Who Invented Crossbows?
Crossbows originated from ancient China, they were invented during the Zhou dynasty, around the year 700 BC. The Zhou Dynasty was the longest-lasting of ancient China’s dynasties. It came after the Shang Dynasty and it was dismantled when the Qin army attacked and captured them around 256 BCE.
A man by the name Mr. Ch’in of Ch’u is credited for the invention. When it was invented the crossbow has a horizontal mount bow, stock, and trigger mechanism. The crossbow would shoot up to 650 feet which more than 200 yards. He invented a crossbow with complicated shooting and trigger mechanism so that the enemies would find it very difficult to copy.
When inventing the crossbow, the Chinese did not have war in mind but peace, they worked with the thought that when someone came with a complicated and fierce weapon, the war would end , and the one with superior weapons would be obeyed and the fight would stop. In the 200BC the crossbow was very complicated that a law was passed to prevent people from taking crossbows out of China.
Around 157 BC, Prince Liang Hsiao Wang who was was in charge of an army which 50,000 and several hundred thousand crossbows. The crossbows were of different sizes and weights, some were very big they had to be operated by several soldiers.
The eleventh century saw the development of rapid-firing crossbows, they would fire 20 arrows in only 15 seconds. Crossbows in china were still being used until 1895, after which modern firearms were used in war.
The Modern crossbow today is for hunting and archery. Modern crossbows are made of metal parts and are pretty lightweight. They have longer ranges and speeds. Accuracy and precision are improved by the use of scopes and sights.
